Detroit Renaissance wins third-straight PSL volleyball championship

Detroit Renaissance edged rival Detroit Cass Technical in a marathon three-hour match 3-2 to earn its third-straight Detroit Public School League volleyball championship. Cass Tech won the first set 25-18. Renaissance tied the match a 1-1 with a 25-10 win in the second set. Cass Tech took the third set 25-17 only to see Renaissance rally again to win the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set. The fifth set was a battle of wills as the two teams were tied 10 times, the last time at 13-13. Renaissance won the final two points for the victory. Detroit Mumford beat Detroit Western International 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-22) in the consolation game. Renaissance faces Royal Oak in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1, District 22 volleyball opener on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Berkley. Cass Tech won its MHSAA Division 1, District 21 opener 3-0 over River Rouge 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 31. Cass Tech will face Western in the district semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
