Detroit Renaissance wins PSL girls basketball championship

Detroit Renaissance held off Detroit Mumford 48-36 to win the Detroit Public School League Girls Basketball Championship, its second in three seasons. Against Mumford, Renaissance led 15-8 after one quarter and 26-16 at halftime. Mumford cut the lead to 37-31 after three quarters. Sophomore Christine Sanders scored 13 points and sophomore Makayla Johnson had 12 points to lead the Phoenix. Freshman Imani Johnson added 10 points in the win. Renaissance (14-5) beat Mumford (8-7) 67-56 on Jan. 24. Renaissance had to forfeit in last year’s PSL tournament due to a COVID-19 quarantine. But the Phoenix returned for the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs, advancing to the title game, falling to Hudsonville.

Cherish Jefferson had 13 points, five steals, and three rebounds to lead the Mustangs to the PSL final. Amelia Levine and Ce'Niyah Williams both scored seven points in the victory.

Sophomore Christian Sanders scored 19 points for the Phoenix. Makayla Johnson had 14 points. Imani Johnson added 12 points and Harmonie Bolton scored 11 points in the victory.

Cherish Jefferson had 20 points to lead the Mustangs, including nine in the fourth quarter. Samiyah Jefferson scored nine points. Ce'Niyah Williams and Amelia Levine both added six points in the win.

Detroit Martin Luther King Jr.6 51, Detroit East English Village7 22

Senior Taeyana Taylor scored 22 points to lead the Crusaders. Sophomore Charez Lewis had 13 points. Junior Brianna Hughes added 10 points in the victory.

Aiyanna Tanksley scored 50 points and added 20 rebounds for the Comets. Serenity Howard added 10 points in the victory.

Sophomore Christian Sanders had 21 points, four assists and five steals to lead the Phoenix. Junior Kiyla Brooks had 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the win.
