Detroit Cass Technical repeats as PSL boys cross country championship
Seven Detroit Cass Technical runners earned All-City honors for finishing among the top 20 in Detroit Public School League Cross Country Championship. The Technicians’ presence up front enabled them to win their fourth PSL title in the past six years, with a low score of 31 points. Detroit Renaissance (57), Detroit Frederick Douglass (79), Detroit Pershing (109) and Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. (130) also placed among the top five teams. While Pershing senior Tharren Hill entered the chute nearly a minute in front of the pack at 18:18.4, Cass Tech had the next two finishers in Duane Wright (19:07.4) and Terrance Broughton (19:16.1). Matthew Collins (sixth, 19:59.8), Kelston Richmond (seventh, 20:01.3) and Ethan Dorsett (14th, 20:16.8) were the other scoring runners for Steve Hall’s squad. Due to the lasting presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event combined the PSL Division and city-wide division championships, and All-City honors were expanded to the top 20 finishers. Cass Tech was the Blue Division champion, and Pershing, which finished fourth overall, was the Gold Division winner.

Detroit Cass Technical wins PSL girls cross country championship on tiebreaker
How often does the tie-breaker rule come into play when deciding the Detroit Public School League girls’ cross-country championship? Meet officials could not recall it ever happening before in the events history.
But after Detroit Cass Technical and Detroit Renaissance both totaled 29 points, officials needed to invoke the rule which compares the tied teams’ sixth runners. In this case, the Technicians’ sixth and seventh runners, Aliyah Coleman and Kamari Robinson, finished in front of Renaissance’s fifth scoring runner, giving the Technicians the title and breaking the four-year string of Phoenix wins. Overall, Cass Tech had seven of the field’s top 11 finishers. However, the individual title remained at Renaissance. After four-time champion Kynnedee Cowles graduated, Phoenix freshman Lauren Bickerdt stepped up and finished first in 20:37.2, 100 seconds ahead of teammate Christian Sanders. Due to the lasting presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event combined the PSL Division and city-wide division championships, and All-City honors were expanded to the top 20 finishers. Cass Tech was the Blue Division champion, and Detroit Cody, which finished fourth overall, was the Gold Division winner.
