Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. rallies to win PSL Blue Division football championship

Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. rallied to beat rival Detroit Cass Technical 21-15 to earn the 2021 Detroit Public School League Blue Division football championship. Cass Tech (5-3) forced three first-half turnovers to take a 15-0 halftime lead. Junior quarterback Dante Moore found senior Joseph Williams for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 10:01 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 15-7 with sophomore Terrence Moore’s extra point. Dante Moore later found senior Chansey Willis Jr. for a 74-yard touchdown with 8:32 left in the fourth quarter. Senior Terrence Brown ran for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 15-15. Senior Lynn Wyche-El Jr. returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown with 6:50 left to give King (7-1) the winning margin. Moore finished 15-of-24 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. King edged Cass Tech 41-34 on Sept. 10. King is ranked No. 1 in Division 3 in the latest Associated Press poll and is second in Michigan High School Athletic Association playoff points (70.881) in the division. King will host  Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller (5-2) on Friday, Oct. 22. The loss puts Cass Tech in danger of missing the MHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2007, as they are currently four spots out of a berth with only 50.482 points. Cass Tech will finish the regular season Thursday, Oct. 21, at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory (5-3).

Detroit Central dominates Detroit Pershing to win PSL Gold Division football championship

Detroit Central shut out rival Detroit Pershing 30-0 to earn the 2021 Detroit Public School League Gold Division football championship. Sophomore Kayvon Grandberry recovered a blocked Pershing punt by senior Judah Daniels in the end zone to give Central a 7-0 lead. Central increased the lead to 9-0 on a safety as senior Ty’Juan Robinson  and sophomore Decarlos White tackled a Pershing receiver in the end zone. Senior quarterback David Williams tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to White in the third quarter to make the score 16-0. Junior Anthony Johnson stripped the ball from a Pershing ball-carrier, returning it 36 yards into the end zone to make it 23-0. Williams connected with junior Anthony Walk for an 18-yard touchdown to conclude the scoring. The Division 7 No. 9-ranked Trail Blazers improved to 8-0 on the season and rank third in the division in Michigan High School Athletic Association playoff points with 50.482. Pershing falls to 5-3 on the season. The Doughboys had 36.196 MHSAA playoff points in Division 6 and currently qualify for a playoff spot.
